Holy awesome, Batman! Best tool purchase of the year!
I bought this to change tires at the race track. But I just keep finding uses for it. Tons of power for a cordless and decent run time on the little lithium batteries. At first the little batteries do not fit, but there is a ridge in the tool there to force you to use the big batteries. All you have to do is grind it off and the smaller kit batteries will fit. Works great for: driving in big lag bolts for a deck, changing a flat tractor tire in the middle of a field, swapping car tires.What it does lack is variable speed, but this is a brute force tool anyway. The little led light is handy too. FYI, at the track, one battery will do almost 2 sets of tires tourqued to 100 ft/lbs.

Love it!
I hestitated to buy this as I've heard stories from friends that many of these beasts don't have much torque to them. Well, I shouldn't have waited, this model is pretty much what I was hoping to get. It's got great battery life and plenty of torque. The ergonomics are good, but be pre-warned about the weight of it, it's pretty heavy. It's built like a tank, and I guess that I wouldn't want it any other way. It is easy to use, although the toggle switch to power it does take a few minutes to get used to. The first few minutes of using it, I found myself not paying attention to which way I was pushing the toggle and going the reverse direction to that which I intended. That was my stupid mistake, with any new tool you need to pay extra close attention to it the first few times you use it.Edit to add that if you are working on some very tough/tight bolts, make sure that your battery is fully charged. These batteries are not supposed to show that property, but...

Wish I bought one sooner!
I purchased this solely for removing the 1 1/8" pinion nut on a 15 year old Jeep Cherokee. They're torqued from the factory to 200 ft-lbs. In MN, the salty roads lead to a lot of rust on threaded fasteners, so I was worried about being able to remove such a large, heavily torqued nut.This impact had absolutely no problem getting the nut off. 2-3 seconds of hammering and off it came. For anyone who lives in the rust belt, buy one of these immediately. I wish I had gotten one sooner, it is SO much better than a 2' breaker bar with a pipe over the end of it. Plus it's still small enough to get into most places.It paid for itself on just this one repair as the local shop quoted me ~$250 for this fix.For anyone who frequents junkyards, this tool's value is immeasurable. Taking apart rear ends or suspensions is absolutely no problem, though I recommend an extra battery.Cons? It's a bit heavy, especially at arm's length, but it removes...

Believe the hype
Popular Mechanics' glowing review of this drill is well deserved in my opinion. It is light, fast, well-balanced, and easy to use. Bosch's competing model (17618-01) feels faster and stronger, but it also weighs a ton, is a bit lengthy, requires you to switch between driving and drilling modes by rotating the 25 position clutch selector all the way back to zero, and the side handle slipped around a lot on the floor model I played with.With the 9-9/16" Makita you can instantly flip between driver, drill and hammer modes with a little switch, hoist it above your head for extended periods of time without strain, and the forward/reverse selector is also much easier to hit. Throw in the handy depth gauge thingy and the belt clip and it's tough to miss those extra few BPMs Bosch has to offer unless you plan on dropping your drill on concrete with any degree of frequency. I can't comment on Bosch's battery life claims as I did not use one long enough to wear it down, but if you...

Best of the bunch
I am a contractor and I have owned dozens of drills. Half a year ago or so, I had a subcontractor doing some HVAC in a basement for me. He whipped out his Makita to drill a hole in the near pitch black joist bay and voila, there was light! No cords, no set up time, no precariously balanced flashlights, just bright light coming straight from the drill. Now that is cool and a heck of a time saver.I did my research and quickly realized the advantages of this drill over its competition. So I bought it and its sister drill set the 'Makita LXT218 18-Volt 2-Tool LXT Lithium-Ion Cordless Combo Kit'. This set includes a lighter weight drill and an indispensable compact extremely light weight impact driver. Nothing comes close to this combination of drills and they ALL have lights and all of the lights stay on for 10 or so seconds after you release the triggers. This feature is clutch. Amazing device!
I have had this combo drill for around a year now and never had a problem. I use it mostly in impact driver mode for wood screws. The amazing thing about using an impact driver for screws, as many people are finding out, is the ability to back out your screws without damage! I use soft, expensive stainless steel screws and occasionally have the need to unscrew one. Using a hand screw driver or conventional driver will inevitably result in stripping the screw head, then you will need to resort to pliers or vise grips. This takes time and completely destroys your screw as well as often causes damage to the surface of the workpiece. Enter the impact driver! When the driver detects resistance it automatically enters hammer mode and puts forward force on the screw, only turning as quickly as it can without damage. This gives the impact driver the unique ability to back out even soft screws without damage. The screws are completely reusable!This amazing machine...

One size never fits all but this is nice
I bought this when it came out, love it!When I had difficulty driving screws it was because I had it in hammer drill mode, NOT impact drive mode.It will drive deck screws below the surface.Fasteners with washers or a head can rotate brackets, you just have to learn the feel of it.Any driver can snap off a head, thats a weak fastener.If your fastener stops proud of the surface you probably found a steel plate.Four out of five stars for slight difficulty in sliding mode selector from day one, even so, its still the driver I use everyday for my living.

A lot less to lug
I love the four function aspect of this tool. It has an LED light too. Small, light and you can drill, screw, hammer drill, and drive lag bolts with it. Its new 18v LXT battery gives it more lifetime and power than the 14.4v but weighs about the same. The hammer drill isn't impressive, but a good tool for putting a few anchors in a wall or through tile. I gave it four instead of five because Makita still hasn't figured out that thier cases need to be mroe rugged. I bet the latches are going to be broken in less than a year.

My Favorite Tool - A Carpenters' honest opinion
I've owned this Makita impact gun for over three years and still love it. I'm a professional carpenter/handyman and this tool by far is the one I use most. It's the most comfortable cordless drill I've ever handled (and I've owned at least seven). It will drive 3 inch screws into hardwood over and over. Squeeze the trigger and the light comes on.. a joy, especially during winter work days when it gets dark early. The small size gets you into tight places like narrow cabinets or under sinks (where again that light is great)!After using this tool a while, it becomes second nature - how much pressure you need to squeeze the trigger for just the right amount of torque. The impact feature is handy for backing out soft brass screws without stripping them (like those tricky high end Baldwin hinge screws).The quick release is simple to use.. the belt hook is handy when you go up a ladder with your hands full.. the batteries last a long time and are easy to change.. the charger is...

All around best value
I have been using impact drivers professionally since they were introduced many years ago (they were 9.6 volt, nicad). I rarely use them for drilling but for fastening, it is the tool of choice. This is my 3rd Makita, from the 9.6 to the 12 and now the 18 volt and I have never worn one out completely. Batteries, yes, many. Nicads didn't last all that long in number of cycles, NiMH were much better and now L-Ion which are a vast improvement. Now for this tool. Makita also makes this in a 3 speed model with brushless motor for considerably more money. The 3 speeds of the other tool are unnecessary; I have absolute control of the tool thru the variable speed trigger. As for the brushless motor. They are more efficient, delivering more torque and longer lasting. That means more fasteners per charge and subsequently longer battery life. This is important if you are a professional and putting the tool into production use. All day, every day. Would I prefer it? Yes, if that was the only tool...

Great Drill!
A friend of mine had this driver drill on a window installation job. After using it I went right out and bought my own. I do lots of handyman work and this is now my go-to drill that I reach for first. It's smaller and lighter than the full size Makita drill, but drives and drills as well or better than its big brother and takes the same battery packs. Highly recommended!

Insane
I got this today and did a few tests.First I drove a number of 1/4" X 6" lag screws into treated 2x6 lumber. The long way. No pilot holes. They drove right in. The drill slowed down a little for the last inch but they still went in very fast. I was impressed.Then I decided to see if this came even close to the advertised 1,330 in/lbs of torque. Which is about 110 ft/lbs if you want to do the math. So I chucked in a 1/2" socket adapter with a 19mm impact socket, walked out to my car, and it proceeded to RIP all 5 lug nuts off the wheel. And when I say rip I am not kidding. It wasn't like the tool bogged down and then slowly got faster. I squeezed the trigger and they just came off. My wife cannot understand why I am still smiling from ear to ear 30 minutes later.This is a 10 year old car with rusty lug nuts that I personally hand torqued to 100 ft/lbs only a few weeks ago when I was rotating the tires. I bought it a week too early!
The BTD141 is a 2008 update/improved version of the BTD140. Not much difference but some improved internal parts (slightly higher max torque), slightly different appearance (mainly the plastic gearbox shroud), and a different chuck. This chuck allows you to push in a hex bit without pulling out the sleeve.A week after I bought this, Makita releases the evolutionary with brushless motor on the US market. There is a reason why the BTD144 is the first tool in the Makita line-up to get the brushless technology: Impact drivers are known for their torque but not for their finesse. Simply the best!
OK, guys.. you've found it. Get this one. This Makita impact driver is simply the best drill/driver that I have ever had or seen. The battery lasts FOREVER, the size is the smallest I've been able to find with 18 volts. Get yourself some quick change Phillips & Square head drivers and you are set to go. This thing is light, compact and powerful. Trigger speed sensitive, automatic light on the front, belt clip it great. it's a dream.
